October: Phytosterols and CAD Summary
Over the past month we have examined the role of Phytosterols in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. We have examined the modality of action, the effects, possible contraindications and pitfalls to the use of these Phytosterols (namely in margarine) for improving the lipid profile. Many of us agreed that we would recommend Phytosterols in our practice, even if the patient was on other medications like Statins. The benefits to the use of sterols seem to outweigh the risks at this point in time. However, more studies are needed to fully support their use, especially long term. Furthermore, we learned that not every treatment is suitable for every patient. One must carefully examine the lifestyle, behaviors and reasons behind a patient's hyperlipidemia in order to make the best recommendation for their care. As with all treatments, there are potential drawbacks that exist. Namely, in this case, cost and lifestyle factors may prove to lessen the positive benefit one may receive from the addition of sterols to their diet. All in all, everyone brought up very valid opinions and comments and I thank all of you for your participation. There is no "right" or "wrong" answer to most of these discussion questions...I wanted to make them open to opinion and comments that would inspire thought in others and oneself. Afterall, curiosity inspires genius.
Thank you all,
Nisa Maleki
