1. Review the corresponding month’s publication of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. Select one of the two articles tagged as “Continuing Education Article” that is of topic interest to you. (There should be two in each journal.)
Research the topic thoroughly using various technologies including Med-line searches and Internet searches. Articles from refereed journals should be selected. Articles should predominantly include original research articles. Except for classic research articles, the research articles should have been published within the last 5 years. Select at least one additional article that relates to the continuing education article.
2. Your classmates and participating preceptors will serve as your Journal Club. You will serve as the discussion leader/group facilitator on the Blog for one month as assigned. You will organize the discussion of the articles so that there is a logical flow of information and prepare a bibliography and any other pertinent handouts/attachments. The other months you will actively participate in the discussion of the articles through the Blog.
3. As facilitator, at the start of the month, you will review the current publication of JADA. By the 15th day of the month, you should post the two articles (one being a continuing education article) in either text format, as an attachment, or as a link to the electronic version on the Blog site. In your original post you should present an introduction, overview of the topic, and brief summary of the articles attached. You need to identify specific discussion questions for the club members to answer. In addition, you may include a copy of the CEU questionnaire that is located in the journal.The intern facilitator coordinates the initial posting and facilitates the online discussion. The other club members need to read the posted articles and respond by the 25th of each month addressing the questions posed by the facilitator. The other club members need to respond to 2 other’s posts by the end of the month. The facilitator should be prepared to answer questions on the topic and articles presented. The facilitator participates in the discussion by responding to the posts as needed to keep the flow of the discussion. At the end of the month, the facilitator should conclude the session with a summary statement and recommendations for practice.
